Adler and Domingo Carmen 1981
The Opera
“I first met Kurt Herbert Adler in Luciano Pavarotti;s dressing room during a run of Turandot in the 1977 seasons. Mr. Adler was celebrating his fifty years in opera and twenty-five as general director in San Francisco. The maestro was much beloved, and during this time gala performances and special productions gained attention throughout the opera world. Many of the great singers, directors, and conductors came to San Francisco during this period.
I joined the company in 1978 and was allowed access to all the rehearsals and performances. I’ve been an opera buff along with Pavarotti and Domingo who were the greatest divas of their day. Mr. Adler gave Leontyne Prince and Bright Nilsson artistic talents and voices, and Bright Nilsson their American debuts. This time was a special celebration of artistic talents and voices, and the mix of operatic excellence gave me many opportunities to make intimate portraits and unusual performance photographs.”
